With every passing year, the threats posed by climate change continue to escalate at unprecedented rates. Environmental sustainability is an urgent concern worldwide and India is no exception. Increasing pollution levels coupled with deforestation and land damage has led to several challenges with regards to preserving the natural ecosystem and citizen health across the nation.
According to data obtained from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), India lost almost 30 hectares of healthy land to degradation between 2014 and 2019. Human-led activities have also contributed to 70% of the country’s surface water pollution, poor air quality and premature deaths.
The effects of such conditions are disproportionately felt by people from vulnerable communities. Young students especially struggle with learning about the environment around them and more sustainable practices due to lack of engaging educational and resource availability. Numerous studies suggest how interactive strategies can foster better learning in children yet, many schools within underserved areas continue to not have access to such programs or guiding mechanisms.
Green Teens was founded to address these very gaps in sustainable education by providing both students and educators with innovative tools and initiatives that promote environmental awareness and advocacy. The project aims to inspire the younger generations to embrace better practices, think critically about sustainability and its intersection with entrepreneurship, and become active participants that contribute to a healthier, safer future.
